So, I’ve shown a few illustrations on Facebook, but I thought I’d give y’all a sample of the kids chapter book my brother and I are working on. There’s a working title, but I don’t love it, so I’m not going to tell you what it is. But I will give you the first couple of paragraphs and the first illustration of the book. Enjoy!
Many stories have very happy beginnings. Often a young girl or boy will be running through a field, perhaps chasing a butterfly, and wander too far, or fall down an unusually large hole left by a rabbit with no particular concerns as to the foot traffic in the area.
I’m sorry to say this is not one of those stories.
This story begins with Cordelia and Connor King arriving in the very peculiar town of Woundabout. They were arriving there because they were moving in with their Aunt Marigold, whom they had never met before. They were moving in with their Aunt Marigold because their parents had died, quite unexpectedly and suddenly, in a large explosion on their capybara-training ranch. The explosion happened out in the woods on the ranch, where Cordelia and Connor’s parents trained capybaras to sniff for bombs.
All the capybaras had died as well, except for the runt of litter, named Kip, who Cordelia and Connor had been playing Frisbee with far away from the explosion…
